How to troubleshoot the Windows Component Update for Visual Studio 2005 or for Visual Studio .NET

This describes the steps required and the specific process for troubleshooting the installation of the Microsoft Windows Component Update (WCU). The WCU is used to update systems for the installation of several products including but not restricted to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, Microsoft Office XP Developer, and Microsoft Visual FoxPro 7.0.

Windows Components Update failures

You must install Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET Windows Component Update before proceeding with Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET setup. If Windows Component Update reports failures for a component at the end of setup, you can run the individual Setup for the failed component to see the specific errors and diagnose problems. The stand-alone installers for the components are on the Windows Components Update CD. The following table (which is from the Readme file) lists the updates and their respective installers. You can find separate installation procedures for each component in the "References" section.

Known issues

Installation fails to complete

If the installation of individual components fails, or the installation process becomes unresponsive, Setup may be unable to detect this. Use CTRL+ALT+DELETE to manually shut down the Setup.exe task.

Note Installation of large components, such as Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 2, can take as long as 20 minutes on relatively slow computers or when performed over a network.

Norton AntiVirus reports alert while running Windows Component Update

Warning This workaround may make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.

There are known compatibility problems installing Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 while Norton AntiVirus is running. Microsoft recommends that you install Norton AntiVirus after you run Windows Component Update Setup or, if Norton AntiVirus is already installed, disable it.

Bypass Windows Component Update

You can bypass the Windows Component Update if the individual required updates have been installed. In some cases, Windows Component Update may continue to report failures even though the individual components have been successfully installed. Note, however, that this is only appropriate if all required components are installed. Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET will not function properly without these components.

To bypass Windows Component Update for Visual Studio 2005 or for Visual Studio .NET:

1. Insert Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET CD1.
2. Close any programs triggered by autorun.
3. Click Start, click Run, and then run the following command:
   x:\setup\Setup.exe /NO_BSLN_CHECK
   
   where x is the CD drive

Note The installation of Visual Studio 2005 or of Visual Studio .NET is not supported on Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition. However there are other product installations that use the included Windows Component Update media as well, such as Microsoft Office XP Developer and Visual FoxPro 7.0, so these steps are valid for such use as well.
