You receive an error message when you run Setup for Office XP, and a later version of some system files is required

SYMPTOMS

When you run Setup for Office, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Error 25506. Microsoft Office XP requires updated system files not detected on your computer. You must install the System Files Update prior to installing Office. C:\Winnt\system32\odbcbcp.dll is version 3.70.6.23 when we require version 3.70.8.20.
The error message you receive may instead list one of the following additional files:

ODDBSE32.DLL
ODBCJI32.DLL
MSORCL32.DLL
SQLSRV32.DLL

CAUSE

You may receive this error message if the files listed in the "Symptoms" section are not at the correct version in the \Windows\System folder or the \Winnt\System32 folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Note the file and required version number in the error message.
  2. Quit Office Setup.
  3. On your computer, locate the file from step 1 that is not in the \Windows\System folder on Microsoft Windows 98 or the \Winnt\System32 folder on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.
  4. Check the version of the file to verify that it matches the version number in the error message.
  5. Copy this file to the folder that is specified in the following table, according to the version of Windows that your computer is using. 
    Windows version       Folder location

Windows NT 4.0        \Winnt\System32
Windows 98            \Windows\System
  6. Run Setup for Office again.
