OFFXPDEV: Package Fails to Install on a Computer That Is Running Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

A package that was created by using Microsoft Office XP Developer fails to install on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98. No error message is given. A notification appears that states that the files are being copied, but then nothing. The package may ask you to restart the computer. But after the operating system is running again, Setup does not continue.

CAUSE

The package fails when it tries to update the Windows Installer from the support folder. However, the support folder was not included in the package.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, download and install Office XP Developer Service Pack 1 (SP-1) on your development computer. Then, repackage the application and redistribute it to users who are running Windows 98.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Office XP Developer. This problem was corrected in Office XP Developer SP-1.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. In Microsoft Office XP Developer, create a package.
  2. Remove the support folder from the package.
  3. Deploy the package on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98.
