The Microsoft IDE controller driver always selects PIO for tape drives, and this behavior cannot be changed by a user or a program.

PIO requires the host (computer) to coordinate every input/output transaction. With DMA, devices can communicate directly to each other by using the controller, and this process requires less overhead than PIO.
