Solution-specific menu bar commands are missing when you open a template in Visio 2002

When you open a template in Microsoft Visio, the menu bar commands specific to that solution type may be missing. For example, when you create a new organization chart or open an existing organization chart drawing, the Organization Chart command may not be displayed on the menu bar as expected.

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true, in the order presented:

• Visio is in Reduced Functionality mode. There are no remaining instances where you can start Visio without activating the product.
• You start, activate, and then quit Visio.
• You start Visio for the first time after activation.

Visio may create the Visio.bin file incorrectly when you start Visio for the first time after you activate the product after it has gone into Reduced Functionality mode. The Visio.bin file contains information about installed solutions. As a result, when you open a template from a diagramming solution, commands specific to that solution type may be missing from the menu bar.

Temporary Workaround

To temporarily work around this problem, quit Visio, delete the Visio.bin file, and then restart Visio. To do this, follow the steps appropriate to your operating system.

Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore to start Windows Explorer.
2. On the View menu, click Folder Options (or Options).
3. On the View tab, click Show all files. If Show all files is not displayed, follow these steps:
   1. On the View tab, double-click Files and Folders in the Advanced settings list.
   2. Double-click Hidden files.
4. Click OK.
5. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
6. In the Named box, type visio.bin.
7. In the Look In box, click the drive on which Windows is installed (usually drive C), and then click Find Now.
8. In the Search Results pane, right-click the file, and then click Delete.
9. Click Yes to confirm the file deletion.
10. Restart Visio.
    
    When you restart Visio, a new Visio.bin file is created. As a result, the next time that you open one of the templates listed in the "More Information" section of this article, all of the expected commands are displayed on the menu bar.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Microsoft Windows 2000

1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore to start Windows Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders under Advanced settings.
   
   If Show hidden files and folders is not displayed, follow these steps:
   1. On the View tab, double-click Files and Folders under Advanced settings.
   2. Double-click Hidden files and folders.
4. Click OK.
5. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
6. In the Search for file or folders named box, type visio.bin.
7. In the Look In box, click the drive on which Windows is installed (usually drive C), and then click Search Now.
8. In the Search Results pane, right-click the file, and then click Delete.
9. Click Yes to confirm the file deletion.
10. Restart Visio.
    
    When you restart Visio, a new Visio.bin file is created. As a result, the next time that you open one of the templates listed in the "More Information" section of this article, all of the expected commands are displayed on the menu bar.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Visio 2002 Service Release 1 (SR-1).
