XADM: "Event ID 8012" Error Message When You Start NTBackup

SYMPTOMS

When you start the NTBackup utility (Ntbackup.exe), you may receive the following error message in the Windows NT Event Viewer application log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: NTBackup
Event ID: 8012
The 'ESE API' returned 'Unable to perform the operation. Either you can not connect to the specified server or the service you are trying to connect to is not running.
' from a call to 'HrESEBackupRestoreNodes()' additional data 'COMPUTER'

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • Exchange System Manager is installed on a computer on which Exchange 2000 Server is not installed.
  • The Exchange information store service is not running.

MORE INFORMATION

The error described in the "Symptoms" section of this article is harmless and is logged because the backup program is unable to find the LOCAL Exchange information store at startup (or during a refresh).
