SUMMARY

You can create a new speech recognition profile (a Recognizer profile) or set a profile to accommodate your speaking style. You may want to create a new Recognizer profile if you move offices, the noise level changes on a permanent basis, or if additional people are often present. To do this, click New in the Speech Recognition dialog box. Recognizer profiles allow different users to share the same computer without interfering with other speech configurations.

This article describes how to use speech recognition profiles in Windows XP.

You can choose between several settings and customize the speech profile according to your needs. However, many options are proprietary and may vary between different computers. How to Set or Determine a Recognition Profile

To set or determine a profile (by using the Classic view in Control Panel):

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Speech.
On the Speech Recognition tab, the Recognition Profiles box displays the active profile.
To choose a different profile, click the profile that you want. Note that only one profile can be active at a time.

How to Add a Recognition Profile

Profiles are specific to your voice and environment. The Profile Wizard leads you through several steps to create a Recognition profile. Recognition profiles allow multiple users to share the same computer without interfering with each other's setups.

To add a profile:

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Speech.
On the Speech Recognition tab, click New in the Recognition Profiles box, and then follow the steps in the Profile Wizard.

NOTE: Profiles are specific to speech recognition engines and not all engines support similar functions.

How to Remove a Recognition Profile

To remove a profile:

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Speech.
On the Speech Recognition tab, click the profile that you want to delete in the Recognition Profiles box.
Click Delete, and then click Yes or No when you are prompted.
Click OK or Apply to remove the profile, or click Cancel.

NOTE: An engine must have at least one profile associated with it and you cannot delete the last profile.

How to Train the Speech Recognition Engine

To train the speech recognition engine:

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Speech.
On the Speech Recognition tab, click the speech recognition engine that you want in the Language box.
Click the profile that you want in the Recognition Profile box. Training is specific to an engine and profile so that training one engine or profile set has no effect on any other engine or profile set.
Click Train Profile. The Voice Training Wizard starts. Follow the directions in the wizard.

Note that not all engines support training. If your engine does not, Train Profile is unavailable.NOTE: It is recommended that you spend at least 15 minutes training the computer. The more training you do, the more accurate the recognition will be.
