SYMPTOMS

After you establish a Terminal Server session on a computer that runs Windows XP, you do not hear any sound during the session.

This behavior can occur if the use of sound is turned off on the Terminal Server computer or if the Remote Computer Sound setting on the Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client is not correctly configured.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, turn on the use of sound on the Terminal Server computer and configure the settings for remote computer sound on the RDC client.

To turn on the use of sound on the Terminal Server computer, follow these steps:

To start the Terminal Services Configuration snap-in, click Start, point to Run, type tscc.msc, and then press ENTER.
Double-click RDP-TCP Connection.
In the RDP-TCP Connection Properties dialog box, on the Client Settings tab, click to select the Audio Mapping check box.
Click OK to close the RDP-TCP Connection Properties dialog box.
Quit the Terminal Services Configuration snap-in.

To configure the settings for remote computer sound on the RDC client, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.
In the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box, click Options.
Click the Local Resources tab.
In the Remote Computer Sound section, click Bring to this computer in the drop-down list.
Click Connect to use the new settings.
