Article ID: 307119 - Last Review: November 12, 2004 - Revision: 2.2 Computer stops responding after you upgrade from Windows 98 or Windows Me to Windows XP
This article was previously published under Q307119 SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade a computer to Microsoft Windows XP from Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), the computer may appear to stop responding (hang) right after you type a password and dismiss the password creation dialog box. Additionally, you may see only a blue background on the screen. If you press ALT+TAB to switch between the Windows Logon screen and the Welcome To Windows screen, the screen may not change, depending on what screen you are switching. RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, press ENTER to proceed, or turn off the computer and then restart it.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
