SYMPTOMS

When you specify a display name in Windows Messenger, if you try use a trademarked name such as "MSN," "Microsoft," "Hotmail," or "Passport," you may receive the following error message:
The display name you chose was invalid. Please choose another display name and try again.
Using a trademarked name other than one of those that are listed may also generate this error message.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because Windows Messenger makes certain words and names unavailable for use as display names, to prevent impersonation or fraudulent use of the name.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, change your display name:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Personal tab.
  3. Under My Display Name, type a new display name, and then click OK.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION
