Article ID: 307705 - Last Review: July 27, 2006 - Revision: 2.3 "Error--buffer overrun" and "Runtime Error!" error messages when you open a Visio 2002 or CAD drawing fileThis article was previously published under Q307705 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Visio, when you open an AutoCAD drawing and then save the file as a Visio (.vsd) or AutoCAD drawing (.dwg), you may be unable to open the resulting .vsd or .dwg file in Visio or AutoCAD. For example, when you attempt to open the .vsd or .dwg file in Visio, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Error--buffer overrun. This file may be an AutoCAD R14 beta format file.
Runtime Error! Program:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio10\Visio.exe abnormal program termination
The instruction at "xxxxxxxxxx" referenced memory at "xxxxxxxxxx". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program. CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the size of the original AutoCAD drawing is 2 megabytes (MB) or larger. When you save an AutoCAD drawing as a .vsd or .dwg file, Visio may not handle the save operation correctly with some CAD drawings of this size or larger.
