OFF2000: C++ Runtime Error When You Use Portuguese/Brazilian Proofing Tools

SYMPTOMS

Shortly after you open a file that contains Portuguese-Brazilian text, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error!
Program:...RQUIVOS DE PROGRAMAS\MICROSOFT OFFICE\WINWORD.EXE abnormal program termination

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you are running Microsoft Windows 95, and the Portuguese/Brazilian and Spanish proofing tools are installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The Portuguese/Brazilian version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Temporary Workaround

To temporarily work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

Copy the text to a new document but do not copy the last paragraph mark.

-or-
Save the document in Rich Text Format (RTF), and then reload and save as a Word document again ("round-trip" the file).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem with the Portuguese/Brazilian proofing tools under Microsoft Windows 95. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3).
