SYMPTOMS

When you perform a query against a linked server, this error message may occur:

Server: Msg 8624, Level 16, State 25, Line 7
Internal SQL Server error.

CAUSE

The error message can occur when you use an Indexed Access OLE DB Driver to execute a query against a Cold Index Retrieval Linked Server, which uses variables in the query's criteria.

Hotfix

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, replace the variables with literal values.

If variables are required, concatenate them into the statement. Then use the EXECUTE statement or the sp_executesql stored procedure to execute the statement.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2.
