SYMPTOMS

After you perform a silent installation (an installation without any user interaction or display) of Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot start the MSExchangeConf service: Retry/Cancel

CAUSE

This problem can occur if an invalid PIDKEY parameter (a PIDKEY parameter is a Product ID Key or a CD Key) is entered during a silent installation; Setup seems to continue, but the PIDKEY parameter is rejected without generating an error message (because you are running a silent installation). After Setup finishes, the MSExchangeConf service determines (incorrectly) that an expired evaluation copy of Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server was installed, and the MSExchangeConf service does not start.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, supply a valid PIDKEY as a parameter to the silent installation:
msiexec /qr /i "Microsoft Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server.msi" PIDKEY=valid_PIDKEY

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server.
