SYMPTOMS

If a public folder on Exchange Server 5.5 contains a "zombie" user (a domain user account that has a deleted mailbox) in its Access Control List (ACL), the ACL may be purged if you modify the replica list for the public folder by using Exchange Service Manager in Exchange 2000. With the exception of Owner and Admin, all users that are listed in the ACL may lose access to the folder.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, run the DS/IS consistency adjuster on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer to remove any "zombie" accounts.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

Deleting an Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox creates a "zombie" account in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory. Because of this zombie account, the ACL on the Exchange 2000 replica of the public folder is not updated. The Exchange 2000 server cannot determine what permissions to give the zombie entry, the entire list is rejected, and no one can connect.
