How to Move the SBS 2000 Client Programs Folder to Another Location

SUMMARY

This article describes how to move the Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 client programs folder. You may have to use this procedure to free disk space on a partition or for administrative reasons.

To move the client programs folder:
  1. Stop sharing the client programs folder (by default, this is the C:\ClntApps\ClientApps5 folder). To do this, start Windows Explorer, right-click the ClntApps\ClientApps5 folder, and then click Sharing. Click Do not share this folder, and then click OK.
  2. Using Windows Explorer, move the whole folder tree to the new location.
  3. Share the new location. To do this, right-click the ClientApps5 folder, and then click Sharing. Click Share this folder. Accept the default share name of ClientApps5. If appropriate, add a comment to the share (by default, "Small Business Client Applications"). Accept the default share permissions (Everyone: Full Control). Click Apply to save the changes.

    NOTE: Make sure that you share the ClientApps5 folder, not the ClntApps folder below it. You must do this for the installation scripts to work correctly.
  4. Set the correct NTFS file system permissions on the ClientApps5 folder. With the dialog box from step 3 still open, click the Security tab. Set the following NTFS permissions:
    Administrators: Full Control
    Users: Read
  5. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32).
  6. Locate and then click the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\BackOffice\SBSClients
  7. Double-click the ParentDirectory value in the right pane. Change the value to the new path for the client programs folder. Click OK to save the settings.

    Note When you type the path for the new client programs folder, you must use an uppercase letter for the drive letter.
