Computer Hangs During Shutdown with USB Legacy Support Enabled in the BIOS

Your computer may stop responding (hang) during the shutdown process if Universal Serial Bus (USB) legacy support is enabled in the computer's basic input/output system (BIOS), and if the USB host controller resources that are assigned by Windows differ from those that are designated in the BIOS.

Windows sets the USB host controller to legacy support mode during the shutdown process, but cannot restore the BIOS-designated resource settings. If the current input/output (I/O) port settings differ from the BIOS settings, the device is inaccessible and causes the computer to hang.

Although your computer's BIOS may include an option to disable USB legacy support, doing so may cause additional problems. Note that USB input devices, such as a keyboard or mouse, require USB legacy emulation to work correctly in Real mode (MS-DOS) and Safe mode. As an alternative, you can configure the USB host controller's resource settings to match those that are assigned by the BIOS.

Setting the USB Host Controller to Use the BIOS Settings

1. Refer to your computer's documentation for information about how to obtain the device settings from your computer's BIOS.
2. Follow the steps in the "Viewing the USB Host Controller Settings" section of this article.
3. To disable automatic settings, clear the Use automatic settings check box, if it is not already cleared.
4. Click the Input/Output Range resource, and then click Change Setting.

6. Restart your computer.
7. If the Use automatic settings check box is selected, you may need to repeat these steps, starting with step 2.

Viewing the USB Host Controller Settings

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Device Manager tab.
3. Expand the Universal serial bus controller item by double-clicking it.
4. Click Vendor name PCI to USB Host Controller, and then click Properties.
5. Click the Resources tab.

Setting the USB Host Controller to Use Automatic Settings

1. Follow the steps in the "Viewing the USB Host Controller Settings" section in this article.
2. To enable automatic settings, select the Use automatic settings check box, if it is not already selected.
3. Click OK, and then close the System Properties dialog box.
4. Restart your computer.
