1 System Requirements and Installation

For information about system requirements and installing Word X, open the Installation Read Me.html file in the Microsoft Office X/Read Me folder on the Microsoft Office v. X for Mac CD-ROM or on the Word X CD-ROM.

2 Upgrading from Earlier Versions

2.1 First Run Upgrade
The first time Word X starts, Word automatically upgrades the Normal template, the Address Book (if you are upgrading from Word 98 or an earlier version), custom dictionaries, AutoCorrect lists, preferences, and AutoText entries from earlier versions stored on either the Mac OS 9 volume or the same volume as Word X.

2.2 Upgrading from a Different Volume
If the version of Word you are upgrading from is located on a different volume, you can manually copy your templates and settings files to your Word X volume, and Word will upgrade them automatically. Copy the Normal template to the Microsoft Office X/Templates folder, and copy the preference files you want to upgrade to the Preferences/Microsoft folder in OS X.

2.3 Importing the Word 98 Address Book
Word X automatically imports Word 98 Address Book information if the Address Book Settings (8) file is stored on your Mac OS 9 volume. If your Address Book Settings (8) file is not stored on your Mac OS 9 volume or if the information is not imported automatically, use the following instructions.

Import contact information from the Word 98 Address Book

Do one of the following:

If you have not started Word X at least once

1. Start Word 98 from Mac OS X (Word 98 will open in the Classic environment).
2. On the Tools menu, click Envelopes and Labels.
3. Click the Address Book button.
4. Locate and select your Word 98 Address Book, and then click OK.
5. In the Envelopes and Labels dialog box, click Cancel.
6. Quit Word 98.
7. Start Word X.

Word X will automatically import the contact information from Word 98.

If you already started Word X at least once

1. Start Word 98 from Mac OS X (Word 98 will open in the Classic environment).
2. On the Tools menu, click Envelopes and Labels.
3. Click the Address Book button.
4. Locate and select your Word 98 Address Book, and then click OK.
5. In the Envelopes and Labels dialog box, click Cancel.
6. Quit Word 98.
7. Start Word X.
8. On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click the Commands tab.
9. Click All Commands in the Categories list, and then drag the command FirstRunUpgrade to any visible toolbar.
10. In the Customize dialog box, click OK.
11. Click the Find and Upgrade button that you just added to the toolbar.

Word X will import the contact information from Word 98. To remove the Find and Upgrade button after Word imports the contact information, click Customize on the Tools menu, and then drag the button off the toolbar.

3 Setting Up Word X for Multiple Users

4 Printing Issues

4.1 Encapsulated PostScript Graphics and PostScript Printers Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) graphics might print as low resolution preview images on PostScript printers. Apple will use Software Update (Apple menu, System Preferences command, Software Update pane) to provide an update that will fix the problem. For more information about updates, browse to the Apple Web site: 4.2 Printing on Canon Printers
To print on a Canon printer, click Print on the File menu, or press COMMAND+P. You cannot print by clicking the Print button on the toolbar.

4.3 Slow Printing
Documents containing texture fills, picture fills, WordArt, border art, and wavy borders might print slowly in Office v. X.

4.4 Printing Transparent Objects and Pictures
Some drawing objects and pictures that look transparent on your computer screen will not appear transparent when printed. The transparency of drawing objects that have simple fills, such as solid colors, will print correctly. The transparency of drawing objects that have complex fills - such as gradients, patterns, textures, and pictures - will not print correctly. The transparency of pictures, such as GIF and JPEG files, will not print correctly. Apple might use Software Update (Apple menu, System Preferences command, Software Update pane) to provide updates that will fix these problems. 5 Using the Microsoft Language Register

If you want to enable Japanese features in Office v. X, you must use the Microsoft Language Register with each Office program separately. Move the Normal template (in the Microsoft Office X/Templates folder) to the Trash before you start Word for the first time after you enable Japanese features.

6 Using Design Gallery Live

6.1 Configuring Web Browsers
Design Gallery Live provides you with thousands of free image and sound clips that you can download to enhance the overall look and feel of your documents. If you have trouble using downloaded clips, you might have to configure your browser to correctly recognize Design Gallery Live clips.

Configure Internet Explorer for Design Gallery Live

1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
2. On the Explorer menu, click Preferences.
3. In the left pane, under Receiving Files, click File Helpers.
4. In the File Helper Settings pane, click Add.
5. In the Edit File Helper dialog box, type the following information:
   
   
   • Description: Clip Gallery Live File
   • Extension: .cil
   • MIME type: application/vnd.ms-artgalry
   • File type: CGdb
   • File creator: MScg
6. Under File Type, click Browse and then find and click the Microsoft Clip Gallery program, usually located in the Microsoft Office X/Office folder.
7. Click OK.
8. Under Handling, on the How to handle pop-up menu, click Post-Process with Application.
9. Click OK.
10. Close and restart Internet Explorer.

To configure other browsers for Design Gallery Live, search the browser's Help feature for information about assigning helper programs for file types.

6.2 Associating Downloaded Clips with Clip Gallery
If you install Office in a folder other than the Applications folder, files that you download from Design Gallery Live might not automatically open in Microsoft Clip Gallery. To fix this problem, you can associate downloaded clips (.cil files) with Clip Gallery in the Finder. Before you start the following steps, download a clip from Design Gallery Live (Insert menu, Picture submenu, Clip Art command, Online button).

Associate Downloaded Clips

1. Use the Finder to locate and select the downloaded clip.
2. In the Finder, click Show Info on the File menu.
3. In the File Name Info window, click Open with application on the pop-up menu below the file name.
4. Click the button below the pop-up menu, and then click Other on the list that appears.
5. Find and select the Microsoft Clip Gallery program in the Microsoft Office X/Office folder.
6. Click Add.
7. Close the File Name Info window.

7 Known Issues

7.1 Pictures and HTML Form Objects
If you insert a picture next to an HTML form object, the picture's anchor may be located within the hidden text of the form object. If the picture's anchor is in the hidden text of the object, the picture might not be saved when you save the document as HTML.

7.2 File Name and Font Name Length
Word does not accept file names longer than 31 characters for saving new files. However, you can open and save files that already have file names that are longer than 31 characters.

Fonts with names longer than 31 characters will not appear in the Font list.

7.3 Unicode Characters in File Names
Word cannot open files with Unicode characters in their file names. You must rename these files before opening them in Word.

7.4 Word 95/6.0 File Format
Word X does not support saving in the Word 95/6.0 file format. If you need to exchange files with Word 6.0 users, you can distribute the Word 97-X Converter, which will allow Word 6.0 users to open documents created with Word 97 and later.

7.5 TextEdit Files in Word
Word cannot open TextEdit files that contain pictures. For files that contain pictures, TextEdit uses a variant of Rich Text Format (RTF) that Word does not support.

7.6 F12 key
By default, the keyboard shortcut for the Save As command in Word X is the F12 key. If pressing F12 does not bring up the Save As dialog box, you can reassign a keyboard shortcut for this command by clicking Keyboard in the Customize dialog box (Tools menu, Customize command). For more information about assigning keyboard shortcuts, search for "Assign shortcut keys to a command or other item" in Microsoft Word Help.

7.7 Scanners and Digital Cameras
You can use scanners and digital camera that support TWAIN to insert pictures directly into Office v. X documents (Insert menu, Picture submenu, From Scanner or Camera command). To use pictures from devices that support Adobe Photoshop plug-ins or Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) instead of TWAIN, you must save the pictures to your hard disk before you insert them into an Office document (Insert menu, Picture submenu, From File command). The first time that you display the Office Assistant, the window might be blank. If this occurs, click the desktop, and then switch back to the program to use the Office Assistant.
