WD2002: Whole Paragraph Incorrectly Marked As Modified

SYMPTOMS

If you open a document has minor changes, whole paragraphs may be marked as modified, although only a word or two is modified.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a paragraph mark was inserted or deleted immediately before or after the paragraph that was incorrectly marked as modified. After this occurs, you cannot correct the marked paragraph.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install the latest service Pack, add the following registry key if the registry key does not already exist:
KEY:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options
DWORD VALUE: UseAlternateDocumentCompareMethodForEOP
SETTING: 1
To do this:

  1. Close all programs that are open.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Select the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options
  5. Click Edit, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type UseAlternateDocumentCompareMethodForEOP, and then press ENTER.
  7. Double-click UseAlternateDocumentCompareMethodForEOP.
  8. In the Value box, type 1, and then click OK.
  9. On the Registry menu, click Exit.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2).
