You receive an error message when you apply Office XP Service Pack 1

Important This article describes an error that occurs in a home environment where Microsoft Office XP was installed from a CD-ROM. This article does not apply to you if you are in a corporate environment where you installed Office from a network server or a CD-ROM that was provided by your system administrator.

SYMPTOMS

When you apply Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1), you may receive an error message similar to one of the following:
Error 1328. Error applying patch to file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Msaccess.exe. It has probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this patch. For more information contact your patch vendor.
Note The Office program that appears in the error message may be different from Msaccess.exe.

-or-
The expected version of the product was not found on your system.

CAUSE

This error message may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
•You originally installed an unreleased version of Office XP.

-and-
•You downloaded and installed the Office XP SP-1 update.
To determine whether your version of Office XP is an unreleased version, follow these steps to view the ProductVersion property of the Setup.ini file:
1.Using Windows Explorer, locate your CD-ROM drive.
2.Insert your Office XP CD-ROM, and then locate the following folder on the CD:
drive\Files\Setup
3.Right-click the Setup.ini file, and then click Open to view the contents in Notepad.
4.Look for the section named "[Product]" and the line that begins with "ProductVersion".

In order for the SP-1 update to be installed, the version number that appears after "ProductVersion" must exactly match the version number in the following list. Check the version number that corresponds to your language version of Office.

Note that this is merely a way for you to verify that the ProductVersion installed is accurate. Modifying this line in the Setup.ini file does not allow the installation to continue.

The log file is Office XP <edition> Setup(####)_Task(0001).txt, where 
<edition> is the edition of Office XP that you are installing, and #### are
the numbers that begin with 0001 and are incremented each time you install
or reinstall Office XP, for example, Office XP Professional
Setup(0001)_Task(0001).txt.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem and install SP-1, you must purchase a retail edition of Microsoft Office XP (which displays an Office hologram). Only a retail version of Office XP can be updated. Beta or unreleased versions cannot be updated to SP-1.

MORE INFORMATION

Office client updates use a binary method to update a file. This means that specific parts of a file are updated, instead of the whole file being replaced. As a result, an Office program file that is not a retail version cannot be updated by using the SP-1 client update, because the unreleased file is not the one that a client update is designed to find. This causes the update to fail.
