SYMPTOMS

When you try to start a Performance monitor alert on your Windows Server 2003-based computer, the alert may not start, and you may receive an error message that instructs you to check the event logs for further details.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the Performance Logs and Alerts service in Windows Server 2003 has been changed from earlier operating systems to run under the "Network Service" security context to increase security in Windows Server 2003. However, SMS 2.0 performance counters are designed to run under the Local System account.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the "Performance Logs and Alerts" service to run under the Local System account.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Systems Management Server version 2.0.
