Problems When You Install or Run QuickBooks in Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

You may experience any of the following symptoms:
  • When you try to start QuickBooks after you upgrade to Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition, you may receive the following error message:
    QuickBooks requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher
  • If you install QuickBooks after you install Windows XP, the program may not start after several days of operation.
  • When you start Windows XP, you may receive the following error message:
    This application failed to start because Msjava.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
  • You receive error messages when you view Web pages in QuickBooks.
  • When you are installing QuickBooks 2001 on Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition, you may receive the following error message:
    Installation of Internet Explorer 5.5 was not completed successfully.

    To run many QuickBooks features, Internet Explorer 5.5 is required. You must install it before running QuickBooks 2001.
NOTE: Unless otherwise indicated, "QuickBooks" in this article refers to QuickBooks or QuickBooks Pro versions 2000, 2001, and 2002.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method.
  • You receive a "QuickBooks requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher" error message when you start QuickBooks or QuickBooks does not start after several days of operation.

    QuickBooks checks the Internet Explorer string value in the following registry key and does not run if the value is unrecognized:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Version Vector
    For Windows XP, the Internet Explorer string value in this registry key should be 6.0000. If you upgrade to Windows XP from Windows 98 with a version of Internet Explorer earlier than version 5.5, this registry key may not be updated correctly.

    To resolve this issue, change the value to 6.0000:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following value in the registry:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Version Vector
    3. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
    4. Type 6.0000, and then press ENTER.
    5. Quit Registry Editor.
  • You receive an error message about Msjava.dll when you start Windows XP, or you receive error messages when you view Web pages in QuickBooks.

    QuickBooks requires the Microsoft virtual machine (VM) for the Internet features to run correctly. The Microsoft VM is not included with Windows XP, but hardware manufacturers may have included it on computers on which Windows XP has been preinstalled. The Microsoft VM is also included with earlier Microsoft operating systems if you upgraded to Windows XP.

    To determine if the Microsoft VM is installed, click Start, click Run, type jview, and then press ENTER. If you receive the following error message, the Microsoft VM is not installed:
    'jvew' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

  • You receive an "Installation of Internet Explorer 5.5 was not completed successfully" error message when you install QuickBooks in Windows XP.

    Click OK to acknowledge each message and permit QuickBooks to finish installing. After QuickBooks is installed, restart your computer. When you run QuickBooks, the program will correctly recognize Internet Explorer 6.
