SYMPTOMS

When you try to install or upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition on a Hewlett Packard Pavilion 7840 computer, you may notice the following behavior. The first time that you restart the computer, you may receive the following error message:
STOP 0x0000007F (UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start the computer from the Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM. If you upgraded to Windows XP, you are prompted to continue the upgrade or do a new install. Choose to continue the upgrade.
  2. When the installation program prompts you to press F6 to install a SCSI driver, do not press F6. Instead, press F5, and then select Standard PC.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
