SYMPTOMS

If you try to upgrade your Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer to Windows XP, your computer stops responding during the compatibility check phase of installation. You may also receive the following error message on a blue screen:
An error has occurred. Press enter to return to Windows. Filename vserver (01)+00004d7d, error: 0e:0028:c1xxxxxx

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods, as appropriate to your situation.

Upgrading from Windows Me

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab.
  4. On the General tab, click Selective startup.
  5. Click to clear the Load Static VxDs check box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Restart your computer.
  8. Restart the Windows XP upgrade.

Upgrading from Windows 98

  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the drive:\windows\system folder.
  2. Locate the Vserver.vxd file.
  3. Right-click Vserver.vxd, and then click Rename.
  4. Type Vserver.vxx, and then press ENTER.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Restart the Windows XP upgrade.
