Cannot Use the Undock/Eject Button on the Docking Station to Undock Your Computer

SYMPTOMS

When you try to eject your laptop computer from a docking station, you may be unable to do so, and you may receive the following error message:
Problem Undocking from docking station
You cannot eject your computer because you do not have sufficient security privileges to do so. Please contact your administrator to obtain these privileges.
Note that you may receive this error message even if you are logged on as an administrator.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all of the following conditions exist:
  • You are using the Fast User Switching feature of Windows XP.
  • You are logged on as an additional user.
  • You are trying to undock the laptop by using the undock/eject button that is located on the docking station.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods:
  • Undock your laptop computer by clicking Start, and then clicking Undock Computer.
  • Switch to the first user that logged on to the computer, and the undock/eject button that is located on the docking station should now work correctly.
  • Either log off, or switch to the Welcome screen, and then use the undock/eject button that is located on the docking station.

    NOTE: When you use this method, you do not receive a dialog box that indicates that it is safe to undock because no users are currently logged on. Because of this, you must give the system an amount of time that is sufficient to complete the undock operation. Note that most computers do not permit you to undock the laptop computer until the undock procedure finishes.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
