Random errors may occur when antivirus software scans Microsoft Web Storage System in SharePoint Portal Server 2001 and in SharePoint Portal Server 2003

When you use antivirus software to scan the files that make up Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and the Microsoft Exchange Server information store that SharePoint Portal Server uses to store files for the portal, you may receive error messages similar to (but not limited to) the following: -or-

This behavior can occur because antivirus software frequently locks files while scanning files and folders, and this may produce a wide range of unpredictable results for SharePoint Portal Server.

To resolve this behavior, configure your antivirus software so that it does not scan the following files and folders:

• Drive:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server
• Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Storage System

Where Drive: is the drive letter where you installed SharePoint Portal Server.

Note Typically, this is drive C.

Additionally, you must consider:

  Installable file system drive and the Microsoft Web Storage System
• If any data was placed in another location throughout the installation process you must exclude that location also.
• If you are using Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and you apply Service Pack 1 (SP1), you must exclude the following folder from Anti Virus scans:
  Drive:Windows\Temp\Frontpagetempdir
  After you apply SP1, SharePoint Portal Server 2003 uses this folder when it uploads large files.
