SYMPTOMS

During a Remote Installation Services (RIS) installation operation, Setup may stop responding at the "Setup is Starting Windows" screen.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if there is a video initialization problem. This is the point at which Setup switches into a graphic mode, and if the video is not initialized properly, your system may stop responding.

NOTE: The video initialization issue occurs if the resources for PCMCIA overlap a range that the video driver needs to correctly initialize.

RESOLUTION

Service Pack Information

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
