Windows 2000 may stop responding (hang) for up to one hour during the startup process. This behavior may occur if you are using some USB keyboards that have an incorporated PS/2 mouse port, and a mouse is connected to the port on the keyboard.
The delay occurs because of a longer response time for the chain of devices.

Hotfix InformationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

You might be able to work around this problem by unplugging and then reconnecting the USB keyboard during the delay.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
This issue occurs approximately 5 percent of the time when you start your computer. When the problem occurs, the GUI-mode progress bar shows 12 completed bars. This is when I8042prt.sys detects the keyboard and mouse.
