XADM: How to Send Replication Status Request Messages in Exchange 2000 Server

This article describes how to obtain and to enable a feature for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server that you can use to force your Exchange 2000 computer to send a status request message to determine the state of the public folder hierarchy. This feature is included in Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3. The feature that is described in this article only forces status request messages for the public folder hierarchy itself; it does not effectively force status messages for other folders in the public folder store.

In Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, each computer that has a public folder store sends a nightly status request message to determine the state of the public folder hierarchy. Exchange 2000 Server does not do this. Typically, in Exchange 2000 the status request message is only sent out one time during the lifetime of the public folder store; it is sent when the store is created.

However, in certain circumstances you may have to generate a status request message. For example, if the public folder hierarchy on the Exchange 2000 computer does not seem to replicate, or the public folder hierarchy replicates very slowly, the generation of a status request message may permit the public folder hierarchy replication to continue. Issues with public folder hierarchy replication may occur if the original status request message that was sent when the public folder store was created was dropped and never acknowledged, or if the message was sent to a server with a substantially incomplete hierarchy.

A supported feature that modifies Exchange 2000 Server's default behavior is now available from Microsoft. This feature is included in Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3.

The English version of this feature has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

After you install this feature, you can configure Exchange 2000 Server to generate status request messages for the public folder hierarchy. To do so, you must add the Enable Replication Messages At Startup registry value. To add the registry value, follow these steps.WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32 in the Open box, and then click OK to start Registry Editor.
2. Locate and then click the following registry key:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MsExchangeIS\<ServerName>\Public-(guid)
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value.
4. In the Value Name box, type Enable Replication Messages At Startup.
5. In the Data Type list, click REG_DWORD, and then click OK.
6. In the Data box, type 1 (one), and then click OK.
   
   Note If you set this value to 1, each time the public store starts, a status request message is sent. If you set the value to 0 (the default setting), no status request message is sent when the public store starts.
7. Quit Registry Editor.

Public folder request status messages are only sent when the public store starts. To force your Exchange 2000 computer to send a public folder status request message, you can dismount and then mount the public folder store. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Start Exchange System Manager.
2. Expand Servers, expand the server that you want, expand Your Storage Group Name, and then right-click Public Folder Store.
   
   Note If you have administrative groups defined, expand Administrative Groups, expand Administrative Group Name, expand Servers, expand the server that you want, and then expand Your Storage Group Name.
3. Under Your Storage Group Name, right-click Public Folder Store, click Dismount Store, and then click Yes to continue.
4. Right-click Public Folder Store, click Mount Store, and then click OK to acknowledge that the store was successfully mounted.
   
   When the public folder store mounts, your Exchange 2000 computer sends a status request message to determine the state of the public folder hierarchy.
