MacOFFX: "The Upgrade Cannot Be Verified" Error Message When You Try to Install Office v. X for Mac Upgrade

When you try to install the upgrade version of Microsoft Office v. X for Mac, you may receive the following error message: This problem occurs even if you select the correct folder for the Office product that is eligible for the upgrade (for example, the Microsoft Office 98 folder, or the Microsoft Office 2001 folder).

Note If you try to use Microsoft Office 98 as a qualifying product to install the Microsoft Office v. X Special Upgrade Offer or the Microsoft Office v. X Technology Guarantee offer, you will receive the error listed at the beginning of this article. The Microsoft Office v. X Special Upgrade Offer and the Microsoft Office v. X Technology Guarantee offer require Microsoft Office 2001 at the time of installation.

To resolve this problem, when the error message occurs, use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for your upgrade.

Upgrade from Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition

1. Close the error message window, but do not close the Upgrade Verification window.
2. Eject the Office v. X CD (if it is in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive).
3. Insert the Microsoft Office 98 CD in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then open the Office folder on the CD.
4. Locate the Microsoft Office 98 file, and then copy it to the corresponding Microsoft Office 98 folder on your hard disk (that is, replace the existing file).
5. Eject the Office 98 CD, and then insert the Office v. X CD.
6. Open the Upgrade Verification window for Office v. X, and then click the upgrade folder.
   
   The Microsoft Office Installer should now complete the installation successfully.

Upgrade from Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac

1. Close the error message window, but do not close the Upgrade Verification window.
2. Eject the Office v. X CD (if it is in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive).
3. Insert the Microsoft Office 2001 CD, and then open the Office folder on the CD.
4. Locate the Microsoft Office 2001 file, and then copy it to the corresponding Office folder on your hard disk (that is, replace the file).
5. Eject the Office 2001 CD, and then insert the Office v. X CD.
6. Open the Upgrade Verification window for Office v. X, and then click the upgrade folder.

The Microsoft Office Installer should now complete the installation successfully.
