SYMPTOMS

When you try to insert an Excel object from an existing file into PowerPoint, you may receive the following error message:
server name could not be found.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the file is located in an IBM AFS space or on a Novell server. AFS is an IBM Distributed File System that makes it possible for a UNIX-based computer to interface with Windows networks and host files for Windows-based computers. The AFS client requires that access to all the files be through a mapped network drive. Excel tries to obtain access to a file by using the actual path to the server and share instead of the mapped drive path.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request.
