Windows Prompts You to Change Your Password Every Time You Log On

SYMPTOMS

When you try to log on to Windows XP Professional, you may receive the following message:
Your password will expire in number of days. Do you want to change it now?

CAUSE

This issue occurs when your password is set to expire after a predefined number of days.

RESOLUTION

To prevent the password on a local user account from expiring, follow these steps:
  1. When you receive the message that is listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article, click No.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
  3. Double-click Local Users and Groups, and then click Users.
  4. Double-click the user account that you want to modify, and then click to select Password never expires.
  5. Click OK, and then close the Computer Management dialog box.
NOTE: For information about maximum password age restrictions on a Microsoft Windows 2000 domain account, contact your system administrator.
