How to perform a clean installation of Windows 2000 and IIS to prepare for migrating UNIX Web sites

When you migrate Web sites from UNIX, you must have a solid and stable base on which to perform the installation. This article describes how to determine the best installation method and the most suitable features for a server to which you are migrating UNIX Web sites.

Choosing the installation method

You can use any of the following installation methods to install Windows:

• Run Setup from the installation compact disc (CD) on a computer that is running Windows.
• Run Setup from a network.
• Run Setup for a new installation by using the CD on a computer that is running MS-DOS.
• Run Setup for a new installation by starting the computer from the CD.
• Run Setup for a new installation by starting the computer from the floppy disks.

The most efficient installation method is running Setup from the CD or from floppy disks. If you use this method, you have complete control over the hard disks in your computer and you can reformat and repartition disks as appropriate.

Microsoft recommends that you delete any existing partitions, and then create a new partition on which to install Windows.

Choosing the features to install

You do not have to install all of the features of Windows 2000 to support a Web site. Additionally, depending on the complexity of the Web site that you are migrating, you may not have to install all of the relevant Web-related features.

During the installation procedure, you are prompted to select the features that you want to install on this server. Install the following features for a simple Web server:

• Internet Information Services (IIS)
• Site Server Internet Locator Service (ILS) (this service is included in Networking Services)

Install the following additional features for an advanced Web server that uses scripting and dynamic elements:

• Internet Authentication Service (IAS)(this service is included in Networking Services)
• Certificate Services
• Indexing Service

Install the following additional features for a Web server that is part of a larger Web farm in which you support multimedia streaming. Additionally, install these features to share resources and disk space and to distribute your Web site's content over many servers:

• Remote Storage
• Message Queuing
• Quality of Service (QoS) Admission Control (this service is included in Networking Services)

Include the following features with your server if you want to incorporate support for TCP/IP network services:

• DHCP, DNS, and WINS support (all of these services are included in Networking Services)

Include the following features with your server if you want to use the server to manage other servers in the network:

• Management and Monitoring Tools
• Remote Installation Services
• Terminal Services

After you finish installing Windows, make sure you use the Configure Your Server utility to complete the installation and configuration. By default, this utility starts when you start Windows after the installation.
