HOW TO: Install and Configure Print Services for UNIX

Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP include TCP/IP-based printing. You can use Print Services for UNIX to:

• Make your Windows computer work as a Line Printer Daemon (LPD) and Remote Line Printer client.
• Manage print jobs from remote UNIX clients.
• Send print jobs to UNIX servers.

Installing Print Services for UNIX

You can use Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to install Print Services for UNIX. After you install Print Services for UNIX, you can configure a port to support printing to a remote computer or device that is running LPD.

To install Print Services for UNIX on Windows 2000:

1. Log on to the Windows server with an administrative-level account.
2. Start the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
4. Click Other Network File and Print Services, and then click Details.
5. Click to select the Print Services for UNIX check box, and then click OK.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the installation.

Configuring a Port for Print Services for UNIX

After you install Print Services for UNIX, you must configure a port to print to a remote TCP/IP printer or print queue, such as a UNIX server that is running LPD or a network TCP/IP printer.

To add and configure a port for printing to a TCP/IP printer:

1. Log on to the Windows server with an administrative-level account.
2. Click Start, point to Printers, and then click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard.
3. Click Next, click Local printer, and then click Next.
4. Click Create a new port, and then click LPR port to print to a remote UNIX print server or Standard TCP/IP port to print to a network-connected TCP/IP printer. Click Next.
5. Type the name or IP address of the remote server or printer, and the name of the print queue on that server. For network-connected printers, use RAW as the name of the print queue. If you are using LPR, or if you are using a standard TCP/IP printer port, a name is provided when you type the IP address of the remote printer.
6. Click Next until you can click the printer manufacturer and printer model. When you have completed all of your selections, click Finish to add the new printer port and printer.
   
   NOTE: Make sure that the printer is turned on and available over the network, or that the UNIX print server is available over the network before you try to add the printer port. Print a test page to test for any problems.
