XL2000: You Cannot Reopen a File After You Save It

SYMPTOMS

If you save certain files in Excel 2000, you may not be able to reopen them.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the following conditions are true:

The Japanese language pack is installed and turned on, or the localized Japanese version of Microsoft Office 2000 is installed on your computer.
Your operating system regional settings are configured for Japan.
The file is quite large.

This behavior occurs because there is a problem with the phonetic load code in Excel 2000. When you save the files, Excel retains additional phonetic information, which then becomes unreadable. This behavior seems to occur only with larger files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

   Date         Time      Size       File name     
   -------------------------------------------------
   17-Jun-2002  17:29     1,846,312  Excel.msp
   17-Jun-2002  18:36     4,459,344  Excel_admin.msp

After the hotfix is installed, the English version of this fix will have the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3).
