When you upgrade your Microsoft Windows 98-based computer to Microsoft Windows XP, the keyboard and mouse may stop responding. This problem occurs when the Setup program is at the Windows XP "Welcome" screen.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if you have a Universal Serial Bus (USB) mouse or trackball device that is plugged in the PS/2 port on the computer. This problem can also occur if a serial mouse or trackball is plugged into a PS/2 port. This problem can occur if your computer needs a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) upgrade or if there is an incompatible or outdated version of the Microsoft IntelliPoint or Microsoft IntelliType program installed when you upgrade to Windows XP. RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

WARNING: Incorrectly updating (flashing) the computer BIOS may render the computer inoperable.
