Keyboard and Mouse Stop Responding When You Upgrade to Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade your Microsoft Windows 98-based computer to Microsoft Windows XP, the keyboard and mouse may stop responding. This problem occurs when the Setup program is at the Windows XP "Welcome" screen.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you have a Universal Serial Bus (USB) mouse or trackball device that is plugged in the PS/2 port on the computer. This problem can also occur if a serial mouse or trackball is plugged into a PS/2 port.

This problem can occur if your computer needs a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) upgrade or if there is an incompatible or outdated version of the Microsoft IntelliPoint or Microsoft IntelliType program installed when you upgrade to Windows XP.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

Step 1: Upgrade the Computer BIOS

Contact your computer or motherboard manufacturer to inquire about possible upgrades to the computer BIOS. For information about how to contact computer hardware manufacturers, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

WARNING: Incorrectly updating (flashing) the computer BIOS may render the computer inoperable.

Step 2: Plug the USB Mouse into the USB Port

Plug the USB mouse or trackball device into the USB port, and then restart the computer. Both the mouse and keyboard are correctly detected by Windows when you restart.

Step 3: Upgrade to the Latest Version of the IntelliType and IntelliPoint Programs

To upgrade to the latest version of the IntelliType and IntelliPoint programs, follow these steps.

Microsoft IntelliPoint

  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK)
  2. In the Select your operating system list, click Windows XP, click English (if applicable) in the Select your operating system language list, and then click Download Now.
  3. In the File Download dialog box, click Open, and then follow the remaining instructions to install the Microsoft IntelliPoint program.
  4. Restart the computer.

Microsoft IntelliType

  1. Start Internet Explorer, and then visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK)
  2. In the Select your keyboard list, click the keyboard for which you want to install the IntelliType program. For example, click Internet Keyboard Pro.
  3. In the Select your operating system list, click Windows XP, click English (if applicable) in the Select your operating system language list, and then click Download Now.
  4. In the File Download dialog box, click Open, and then follow the remaining instructions to install the Microsoft IntelliPoint program.
  5. Restart the computer.
