OFFXP: You Are Prompted for the CD for a Product Other Than the Patch You Are Installing

When you try to install a patch for Office XP or for one of the Office programs that is listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive a message that prompts you to insert a CD-ROM for another program or patch.

This behavior may occur if there is an earlier version of Office or a stand-alone Office product installed on your computer.

To resolve this issue, remove the earlier version of Office or stand-alone Office product, and then repair Office. For example, if you have Word 2002 and Office XP installed, remove Word 2002.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Use one of the following methods. Method 1 requires that you have the product CD to remove the program. If you do not have the CD, use Method 2 or Method 3.

Method 1: Remove the Office Program by Using "Add or Remove Programs"

Step 1: Use Add or Remove Programs to Remove the Office Product

1. Insert the product CD into the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive. Hold down the SHIFT key to prevent the setup program from starting.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
4. Click Change or Remove Programs.
5. In the list of installed programs, click the stand-alone Office program or the earlier Office installation.
6. Click Remove.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the removal process.

Step 2: Repair Office

1. Quit all programs.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
4. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office XP, and then click Change or Remove.
5. In the Repair dialog box, click Repair.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the repair process.

Method 2: Use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to Remove the Office Program

Step 1: Remove the Program

NOTE: For information about how to obtain the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, see the "References" section later in this article.

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Install Clean Up.
2. In the list of installed programs, click the stand-alone product or earlier Office installation, and then click Remove.
3. When the removal process is completed, click OK, and then click Exit.

Step 2: Repair Office

1. Quit all programs.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
4. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office XP, and then click Change or Remove.
5. In the Repair dialog box, click Repair.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the repair process.

Method 3: Remove Office from the Command Line

Step 1: Remove the Program

1. Click Start, click Run, type msiexec.exe /x guid in the Open box (where guid is the 32-character alphanumeric globally unique identifier (GUID) that is associated with the product.)
   
   NOTE: For the appropriate GUID number, see the article that is listed in the "References" section later in this article.
2. Click OK.

Step 2: Repair Office

1. Quit all programs.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
4. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Change or Remove.
5. In the Repair dialog box, click Repair.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the repair process.
