NTFS May Not Detect When a CD or a DVD Is Removed

SYMPTOMS

After you remove a CD or a DVD from your computer, the NTFS file system may not detect that the disk was removed even if you insert a different CD or DVD into your drive.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the NTFS does not release the VCB (Volume Control Block) of the CD or the DVD that you removed.

Note A VCB is a file-system structure that is internal to the operating system. In this structure, the NTFS maintains state information about a mounted volume.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT 4.0.
