"0xC103FC93" error message occurs when you try to install Exchange 2000 Server on an existing Exchange Server 5.5 site

SYMPTOMS

If you try to install Exchange 2000 to join an existing Exchange Server site, you may receive one or both of the following error messages:

This account must be valid before continuing

-or-

Setup encountered an error while attempting to bind to the Exchange server "[Server_Name]":0xC103FC93(64659): The Exchange 5.5 directory service could not be contacted. Please ensure that the service is running properly, that it is listening on the correct port, and that you have the appropriate permissions needed to connect to this server.

In the Exchange Server Setup progress log, you find the following error message:

[15:14:56] ::ScFindLDAPPortNumberUsingDAPI (N:\admin\src\libs\exsetup\dapiaccess.cxx:682) Error code 0XC103FC93 (64659): Could not bind to the Microsoft Exchange Directory server Exchange5.5_Server_Name. The Microsoft Exchange Server computer does not respond.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

You installed Active Directory Connector (ADC) from the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server CD instead of the Exchange 2000 CD.
DNS is not configured properly in Exchange Server. DNS may not be pointing to a DNS server that has a record for the Windows 2000 Active Directory directory service.
If you install Exchange 2000 in a domain that is different from the domain that the existing Exchange Server computer is in, you may not have a two-way trust that works between the two domains. If your Exchange Server computer is in a Microsoft Windows NT 4.O domain, this behavior may occur if NetBIOS name resolution is not working.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps in the order that they are presented. After you complete each step, test to see if the behavior is resolved. If the behavior is not resolved, continue to the next step.

In the ADC folder on your service pack disk, click setup.exe, and then click Reinstall to update ADC to the latest version.
Configure Exchange Server 5.5 to point to a DNS server that can resolve names for Windows 2000 Active Directory.
If you install Exchange 2000 in a domain that is different from the domain that the existing Exchange Server is in, you may have to establish a two-way trust. To do so, follow these steps:
1. To get NetBIOS name resolution to work, point the two servers to a common WINS database, and then create an Lmhosts file for each domain in the trust.
2. Verify NetBIOS name resolution for all domain controllers by pointing them to a common WINS server.
