Stop Error 0x7E Occurs in Usbhub.sys If USB Bandwidth Consumption Exceeds 100 Percent

SYMPTOMS

If you connect a Universal Serial Bus (USB) input device (such as a keyboard or mouse) to a Windows XP-based computer on which Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or the USB 2.0 update is installed, you may receive the following error message while you are streaming USB audio or video:

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, address, address, address)

usbhub.sys

Note that the second, third, and fourth parameters in the error message may vary.

This problem may occur if USB bandwidth consumption exceeds 100 percent when you connect the USB input device. When this problem occurs, your computer may restart.

CAUSE

Exceeding the maximum USB bandwidth during the enumeration of a new device exposes a lack of protection that is related to device removal.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use any of the following methods:

Connect your USB keyboard or mouse before you start streaming USB video or audio.
If you have already started streaming USB video or audio, stop the stream, connect the USB keyboard or mouse, and then start the stream again.
If your computer has multiple USB host controllers, connect the keyboard or mouse to a USB port that is connected to a host controller other than the host controller to which the USB video or audio device is connected. Most computer that were sold in the last year have two or more USB host controllers. To verify this, view the USB host controllers in Device Manager.
