SYMPTOMS

When you play sounds in some Microsoft programs, the program may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior may be caused by the software that decompresses the audio data in the Start.wav audio file.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft has released the Microsoft Internet Explorer Navigation Sound update that resolves this problem by replacing the Start.wav file with a version that contains uncompressed audio data.

This update was released in March 2002 and is available on the Microsoft Windows Update Web site:
