SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Office XP or Microsoft Office 2003 by using the Custom Install Wizard, the Office programs may not install as you expect.

CAUSE

Office XP and Office 2003 use Intelligent Setup to detect the installation state of your currently-installed features. When you configure the Office Custom Install Wizard to install or not install an Office program, the wizard may not perform as you expect. This occurs because Intelligent Setup is mirroring the current state of the same program from a previous Office installation.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, start Office XP Setup or Office 2003 Setup with the migration of feature state turned off:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following:
    D:\[path]\setup.exe NOFEATURESTATEMIGRATION=1 TRANSFORMS=X:\[path]\YourTransformFile.mst /l*v c:\nameoflogfile.txt
Note D:\[path] is the drive with the Office 2003 Setup files and X:\[path] is the location of your Transform (.mst) file
  3. Press ENTER.
