Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Word 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1). How to Download and Install the Update

The Word 2000 SR-1 Update: October 16, 2002 requires that Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) is installed on your computer. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Client Update

If you installed Word from a CD-ROM, you have the following two options:

• Use the Office Product Updates Web site to automatically install all the latest updates that includes all available service packs and public updates.
  -or-
• Install only the Word 2000 SR-1 Update, by following the steps described later in this article.

NOTE: Microsoft recommends that you install the client update by using the Office Product Updates Web site. The Office Product Updates Web site detects your particular installation of Microsoft Office and prompts you to install exactly what you must have to make sure that your Office installation is completely up-to-date.

To have the Office Product Updates Web site detect the required updates that you must install on your computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site: After detection is complete, you receive a list of recommended updates for your approval. Click Start Installation to complete the process.

Install Only the Word 2000 SR-1 Update: October 16, 2002

Follow these steps to download and install the client update:

1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:

   (http://download.microsoft.com/download/word2000/patch/wrd0902/w98nt42kmexp/en-us/wrd0902.exe)
2. Click Save to save the Wrd0902.exe file to the selected folder.
3. In Windows Explorer, double-click wrd0902.exe.
4. Click Yes if you receive a prompt to install the update.
5. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
6. Insert your Office 2000 CD-ROM if prompted to do so, and then click OK.
7. When you receive a message that indicates the installation was successful, click OK.

NOTE: After you install the Word 2000 SR-1 Update: October 16, 2002, you cannot remove it. The Word 2000 SR-1 Update: October 16, 2002 changes the default behavior of some Word fields. If you want the Word fields to behave as they did before you installed the Word 2000 SR-1 Update: October 16, 2002, set the FieldCalcSecurityLevel registry key to 0. Administrative Update

If you installed Word 2000 from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative public update and deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, follow these steps to download the administrative update:

1. Locate the following Microsoft Web site:
   Click here to download the Administrative Update

   (http://download.microsoft.com/download/word2000/patch/wrd0902/w98nt42kmexp/en-us/wrd0902a.exe)
2. Download the file to your desktop.
3. In Windows Explorer, double-click wrd0902a.exe.
4. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
5. In the Please type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type C:\wrd0902a, and then click OK.
6. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to create the folder.
7. If you are familiar with the procedure for updating your administrative installation, click Start, click Run, and then type the following command in the Open box
   msiexec /a Admin Path\MSI File /p C:\wrd0902a\MSP File SHORTFILENAMES=TRUE
   where Admin Path is the path to the administrative installation point (for example, C:\Word2000),
   
   where MSI File is the .msi database package (for example, Data1.msi), and
   
   where MSP File is the name of the public administrative installation update (for example, WINWORD_Admin.msp).
8. To deploy the update on the client workstations, click Start, click Run, and then type the following command in the Open box
   msiexec /i admin path\MSI file REINSTALL=Feature List REINSTALLMODE=vomus
   where admin path is the path to your administrative installation point (for example, C:\Word2000), and
   
   where MSI file is the MSI database package (for example, Data1.msi).
   
   NOTE: To reinstall all Office components on the client computer, use REINSTALL=ALL.

How to Determine Whether the Update Is Installed
