Summary

This article describes known sound-related issues that you may experience when you play Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle for Europe.

More information

The following list describes known sound-related issues in Combat Flight Simulator 3.

General Sound Issues

Note To resolve many general sound issues, contact the manufacturer of your video card to obtain and install the latest video card drivers. For information about how to contact the manufacturer of your video adapter or sound card, see the "References" section of this article.
  • Download and Install the Combat Flight Simulator 3 Update

The Combat Flight Simulator 3 Update addresses some sound issues. To download and install the update, or for more information about the update, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/games/combatfs3/downloads.aspx
  • No Bullet Sounds

When you play Combat Flight Simulator 3 multiple-player, you may not hear the sound of other players hitting your aircraft. To resolve this problem, install the Combat Flight Simulator Update.
  • No Sound Card

If a sound card is not installed in your computer, you do not receive advisor messages about wingman chatter in Combat Flight Simulator 3. This behavior occurs because the message text is a component of the .wav files that are used to play back the wingman chatter, and you cannot play these files if a sound card is not installed.
  • No Sound During Game Play

You may have no sound during game play. This behavior may occur if your video adapter drivers are not compatible with the game. Combat Flight Simulator 3 detects incompatible video drivers and sets the game to run in Safe Mode. Safe Mode disables sound in the game. To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your video card to obtain and install the latest video card drivers. For information about how to contact the manufacturer of your video adapter or sound card, see the "References" section of this article.

    To work around this problem:
    1. Quit Combat Flight Simulator.
    2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Games, point to Combat Flight Simulator 3, and then click Run CFS3Config.
    3. In the CFS3 Configuration dialog box, on the File menu, click Custom Settings. Click OK to acknowledge the warning message.
    4. On the Window menu, click Overrides.
    5. Clear the Disable Sound option.
    6. Click OK to close the Parameter Editor for Overrides dialog box.
    7. In the CFS3 Configuration dialog box, on the File menu, click Exit.

Hardware-Specific Sound Issues

  • Crystal Audio Sound Cards

The display in your Combat Flight Simulator 3 game may suddenly appear blank at certain times during the game. To work around this problem, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
    3. Click the Sound tab.
    4. Under DirectX Features, move the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider to the left until it reaches the No acceleration setting.
    5. Click Exit.
  • Aureal Vortex II Sound Cards

When you use the drivers that are included with the Aureal Vortex II sound card, you may experience sound delays and popping sounds.

To resolve this issue, install the latest driver that is available for your sound card. Contact your sound-card manufacturer for more information about how to do this or to inquire about the availability of the latest drivers for your sound card.
  • AVANCE A97 Sound Card

The computer might stop responding, or you might experience choppy game play when you fly a mission.

To resolve this issue, reduce sound acceleration:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
    3. Click the Sound tab.
    4. Under DirectX Features, move the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider all the way to the left (to No acceleration).
    5. Click Exit.
  • No Sound with S3 Graphics Pro Savage

If the S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR is installed in your computer, you may hear no sound during game play. You may also receive the following error message:
CFS3 is running with reduced visual quality because of out of date driver or unsupported hardware.
This behavior occurs because S3 video adapter drivers are not compatible with the game. Combat Flight Simulator 3 detects incompatible video drivers and sets the game to run in Safe Mode. Safe Mode disables sound in the game. You may be able to resolve this issue by downloading the latest video drivers. Visit the following S3 Graphics Web site to download and install the latest drivers for your video adapter:
    http://www.s3graphics.com
For information about how to contact the manufacturer of your video adapter or sound card, see the "References" section of this article.

If updating to the latest video card drivers did not resolve the issue, upgrade your video adapter. If you do not want to obtain and install a new video adapter, return the product for a refund.
