Modifying Internet Explorer Advanced Options May Remove the Internet Explorer Icon from the Desktop

SYMPTOMS

If you modify any of the default options on the Advanced tab in the Internet Options dialog box, the Internet Explorer icon may be removed from the desktop after you click Apply or OK.

CAUSE

The default value for the Show Internet Explorer on desktop setting is incorrectly set to hide the desktop icon.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, download and install the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, make sure that the Show Internet Explorer on desktop check box is selected before you click Apply or OK:
  1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Click to select the Show Internet Explorer on desktop check box.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
