This article was previously published under Q331895 SYMPTOMSWhile copying a file to a write-protected IDE removable
disk, you receive one of the following error messages: Semaphore
Timeout Cannot copy <Filename>: The
request could not be performed because of an I/O device
error CAUSEThe Atapi.sys driver incorrectly processes the status
received from the device. This causes the Atapi driver to return incorrect
status information. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, use the updated version of the
Atapi.sys driver. By using this update, the correct error message is displayed,
as shown in the following: The disk is write-protected If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix. Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request.
