MORE INFORMATION

Warning: If you edit the metabase incorrectly, you can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall any product that uses the metabase. Edit the metabase at your own risk.

Note: Always back up the metabase before you edit it.

In order to complete below steps the IIS 6.0 Resource Kit must be installed on the machine.

1. Execute Metabase Explorer by clicking Start | All Programs | IIS Resources | Metabase Explorer | Metabase Explorer
2. Expand LM | SmtpSvc
3. Right-click 1 (Virtual Server number), then select New | String Record
4. Under Record Name or Identifier choose ConnectResponse in drop down text box
5. Click OK then double-click on the new identifier in the right pane
6. In Value Data type box type the banner you want to be displayed
7. Stop and then restart the SMTP service

To confirm that the banner has been changed, telnet to port 25 of the virtual server. This is done by opening a command prompt and typing:

Telnet exchange_server 25

Note: The fully qualified domain name (FQDN) and the date and time will still be displayed. If you want to change the fully qualified domain name (FQDN), this is done by taking Properties of the SMTP Virtual Server (select the Delivery tab, then click Advanced.)

Below text is an example of modified banner:

220 hostname.domain.com Authorized Users Only! Sat, 27 Mar 2004 20:26:52 +0100
