Internet Explorer or other browsers installed onto Windows XP, may halt or shut down, when browsing a site that uses Java and or Microsoft Java Virtual Machine
The most common cause is that multiple java installations are conflicting by trying to execute at the same time, or have mixed installations from Microsoft and/or Sun Microsystems
NOTE: Step 2 of the resolution requires the use of Regedit, if you don’t feel comfortable using Regedit, Please do not proceed with the uninstall process, when used as improperly the changes made to your registry could render your system unbootable.
The only resolution is to uninstall Microsoft Java Virtual Machine and not use it, or install Suns Java plug-in or distribution of Java
Step 1) Click on the Start menu and choose Run.
Enter the following command including the spaces,
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall
You will be prompted whether to go ahead with the uninstall or to cancel it, choose yes to uninstall
Your system will reboot, proceed to step 2.
NOTE: Step 2 requires use of Regedit, if you don’t feel comfortable using Regedit or have never used Regedit before, it is not recommended that you do so as it may render your system unbootable
Remove the following directories; only after Step 1 has been fully completed
the \%systemroot%\java directory, usually c:\windows\java
the .pnf file \%systemroot%\inf\java.pnf
and from \%systemroot%\system32 the following 2 exe files
usually c:\windows is \%systemroot%; Although this is not always true.
The following registry keys must be removed using Regedit
The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry sub-key
The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry sub-key
Only use this specific method to uninstall MS Java Virtual Machine from Windows XP Professional, Media or Home Editions
