SUMMARY

Unable to search for content on Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 after applying Windows 2003 SP1. Errors in the application event logs: Event ID: 7012. and Event ID: 7073.

Searching no longer works on Microsoft Office Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 after applying Windows 2003 SP1. WSS Searches are not affected.
Errors are generated in the Application Event Logs:
Event ID: 7012. An error occurred while propagating to search server and 0x80070003 - The system cannot find the path specified.
Error: 7073. Index propagation to Search server <PORTAL SERVER NAME (IP ADDRESS)> was not stopped. Repropagate the index. A connection with the Search service on a remote machine could not be established. Check the connectivity with the remote machine. If necessary, stop and restart the Search service on the remote machine. (0x8004111a).

CAUSE

The SharePoint Administrator Group Account is not in the local server's administrators group.

RESOLUTION

Add the SharePoint Administrator Group Account to the local server's administrators group on both the portal and indexing servers.

MORE INFORMATION

Prior to Windows 2003 SP1, the SharePoint Administrator Group Account could be in the local server's Power Users group and function correctly.
