There is a prefix "Shortcut to" on new shortcuts present on desktop icons. If one wants to remove this prefix, he or she can easily do that. To do this you have to download and install Tweak UI from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
After the installation, open Tweak UI, highlight "Explorer" and uncheck the box against -Prefix "Shortcut to" on new shortcuts. Click OK/Apply.
